Harold Taylor Chase: August 1883: Things to be taken on a Camping Expedition

For a camping trip it is necessary to have (in addition to cooking materials, when they are needed) ---

A large pillow;  2 (or more) heavy blankets;
Books and pamphlets, with daily papers and weekly Tribune, for reading;
Knickerbockers and thick Stockings;
Slouch hat;
soap, towels, basin, and wash-rag;
Thick shoes, grease, and Slippers;
Winter and summer Underwear - Flannel shirts;  Neckties;  Dressing-case;
Knife and fork, and Tin Cup and spoon;
(A few linen shirts, collars and cuffs):
Autograph album;
Belt, long pants, etc;
Lead pencils;
Overcoat;
Hand-mirror; or a larger, if possible.
W.W. Writing tablet; Eraser; Hatchet and axe;
Coffee pot;  penknife;
Matches; rough gloves;
Pack of cards;
Coffee and condensed milk;
Court plaster;
Pond’s Extract,  Jamaica Ginger, Wm. Tuck’s Anti-Costives and medicine for the opposite effect;
fishing tackle;
boxing gloves;
Indian Clubs;
Rubber coat and hat;
Clothes-brush;
Diary;  Tennis;
Woolen Night Shirt;
Kerosene, and lamp and lantern;
Quill Tooth-picks;
Cigarettes, water-pills;
Nails; Mosquito-netting for front of tent;
Strong Aqua Ammonia for Mosquitos;  base-balls and foot-balls;
Sewing materials;
Hammocks; and a pair of tongs.
