Family Tree (1618 - 1884) for Edward Henry Chase (1835 - 1908)

Edward H Chase’s Father was Deacon Samuel Chase:
Deacon Samuel was born in Hamstead, NH, on February 17, 1788. He had owned a custom shoe store. When he moved to Haverhill, MA, he became one of the largest shoe manufacturers in Haverhill for about 50 years. When the Centre Congregational Church was organized on August 28, 1833, he was elected one of the first 2 Deacons.
From 3 marriages, Deacon Samuel had 12 children.
----His first wife was Betsey Cogwell, who he married on April 29 or April 30, 1811 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Their only child was Eliza, who was born March 15, 1812. Eliza later married Elias Theodore Ingalls on December 27, 1832. They were the parents of the US Senator from Kansas, John J. Ingalls. Betsy died in 1814 in Haverhill, MA.
----His second wife was Hannah Cogswell, sister of Betsy. He married her on Dec. 24, 1818 or Dec. 15, 1819 in Haverhill, MA. Their only child was Charles William, who was born on March 17, 1822. (Charles married Abigail H Gardner (born May 12, 1824 and died December 14, 1913) on October 25, 1845. They had six children together.) Hannah died in Haverhill on February 21 or March 4, 1824.
----His third wife was Priscilla Cogswell, cousin of Betsy and Hannah. They married on May 6 or May 15 of 1825 in Haverhill, MA.
Priscilla and Deacon Sam had eight children:
----George Benjamin (born March 15, 1826 and died March 23, 1826)
----Catherine (Kate) Cogswell Chase (born Dec. 22, 1827, married William H. Hill on January 19, 1859 and died April 3, 1882)
----Benjamin Henry (February 4, 1830 - May 8, 1834)
----Robert Stuart (born Sept. 17, 1831, married Ada L Harvey on October 17, 1855 and died July 16, 1916). Ada was from Portsmouth, NH. Robert was also a prominent businessman in Haverhill, MA.
----Edward Henry (see earlier information)
----Ann Maria (born Sept. 22, 1836, married Charles S Kittredge (or Charles J. Kitredge, MD) on October 20, 1864)
----George Samuel (born February 17, 1839, married Caroline Parker (from Derry, New Hampshire) on October 7, 1868. He lived in Cambridge, Mass, and, to quote Hamilton Chase, “Uncle George, armed with his umbrella, went to China as a young man and was an early participant in the China Trade.” Died in 1919.)
----Frances Priscilla (born April 18, 1843, married Charles A Brooks on December 25, 1865 and died February 27, 1867)
Deacon Sam died in Haverhill, MA on January 24, 1871
Edward H Chase’s Mother was Priscilla Cogswell:
Priscilla was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts on July 5, 1803, the child of Thomas Cogswell and Lydia Harriman Cogswell.
She married Deacon Sam on May 15, 1825 and had eight children. After her husband’s death in 1871, she was living with her son Robert as of 1884.

The first Cogswell relative of Thomas Cogswell in North America was John Cogswell. He was born in Westboro, England, in 1592. He married Elizabeth Thompson (also born in England) on September 10, 1615.
John arrived in North America on the ship The Angel Gabriel, which wrecked off the coast of Pemaquid, Maine, in August of 1635, during the first recorded hurricane to hit New England.
William Cogswell was their son
John died in Ipswitch, MA, on November 28, 1669. Elizabeth died on June 2, 1676.

William Cogswell was the son of John Cogswell.
He was born in 1619 in Westbury Leigh, County of Wilts, England.
He was age 16 when they arrived in North America on The Angel Gabriel.
He married Suzanne Hawkes (born in Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1633. She died prior to 1696) in 1649.
They resided in Ipswich, MA and they had ten children.
William died December 15, 1700 in Ipswich, MA
Lieutenant John Cogswell was the son of William Cogswell
He was born on May 12, 1665 in Ipswich, MA.
He married Hannah Goodhue (born July 4, 1673) and they had 5 children.
He died in 1710.
John Cogswell was the son of Lieutenant John Cogswell.
He was born December 2, 1699 in Ipswich, MA.
He married Susanna Low (born January 12, 1698 and died January 14, 1784)
The lived in Marblehead, MA and then moved to Haverhill, MA.
They had three children.
John died December 18, 1780
John Cogswell was the son of John Cogswell.
He was born February 17, 1728 in Marblehead, MA.
He married Abigail White (born March 29, 1730 in Plaistow, NH. She died on September 10, 1750) on August 29, 1749. They had no children.
Then, John married Sarah Bartlett (she died September 12, 1799) on March 19, 1752 and they had 3 children.
John died on March 31, 1818 in Haverhill, MA.
Thomas Cogswell was the son of John Cogswell.
He was born March 3, 1766 in Haverhill, MA
He married Lydia Harriman (born in Haverhill, MA on February 19, 1772; died in Haverhill on April 20, 1810) and they had 10 children. The seventh child was Priscilla Cogswell.
Lydia died April 20,1810. Then, Thomas married Betsey Kimball on December 25, 1812.
Thomas and Betsey moved to Mt. Vernon, Maine, in 1824.
Thomas Cogswell died in Mt. Vernon, ME, in 1857.

Deacon Samuel’s father was Benjamin Chase.
He was born in Newbury, Massachusetts on May 10, 1759.
He was a drummer with the Minute Men of the Continental Army 1779 - 1786 according to one source. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts states as follows:
“At age 20, he had a dark complexion with stature 5 foot, 7 inches. He was delivered to Col. Gross and enlisted for 9 months under the resolve of June 9, 1779. He was enlisted from Essex County, MA, to serve in the Continental Army. Entered the service August 9, 1779 and was discharged May 9, 1780.”

He married Alice Bartlett on November 22, 1781 and had ten children. Two of those children were Robert Steward and Deacon Samuel.
He died in Hampstead, NH, on December 31, 1826.
The first Chase relative of Benjamin Chase in North America was Aquilla Chase.
He was born in Chesham, England, in 1618. He was an early settler of Hampton, NH,
in 1640. He married Ann Wheeler around 1644.
In 1646, he went to Newbury, Massachusetts, where he was the “first pilot of the Merrimack River.” They had eleven children, including Moses Chase.
The Chase Building on Main Street in Concord, NH (near Depot Street) is also called the Aquilla Building in honor of this relative.
Aquilla died in Newbury, MA in 1670.

Moses Chase was born in Newbury, MA on December 24,1663, the son of Aquilla Chase.
He first married Ann (Tolansh) on November 10, 1684.
His second marriage was to Sara Jacobs on December 13, 1713.
From both marriages, he had 9 children. One of his children was Samuel Chase.
Samuel Chase was born in Newbury MA on May 3, 1690.
He married Hannah Emery on December 8, 1713.
He was killed in an accident in 1743.
He had 9 children. One of his children was Samuel Chase.
Samuel Chase was born in Newbury, MA on October 22, 1728.
He married Sara Stewart.
He was killed in an accident in 1769.
He had 9 children. One of his children was Benjamin Chase (see above; 1759 - 1826)
